Two days after watching the surfboards hanging from the ceiling of the Corolla Surf Shop on the Outer Banks of North Carolina sway in the 5.8-magnitude earthquake as I picked up a ding repair kit we would be forced to evacuate our vacation four days early ahead of Hurricane Irene. This proved to be a prescient evacuation as our route out on N.C. 12 was washed out then littered with rocks and debris and impassible until Monday. On the way home we drove through smoke from the Great Dismal Swamp wildfire. Read full post
